This article summarizes the results presented in a series of invited contributions which were submitted to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of publication of the seminal article ‘‘Homage to Santa Rosalia or why are there so many kinds of animals’’ by G.E. Hutchinson. The authors were asked to explore old and new paradigms of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems. The contributions by Hutchinson in this field are truly landmarks in the history of modern ecological sciences. Self-Organization Pathways and Spatial Heterogeneity in Insulin Amyloid Fibril Formation

At high temperature and low pH, the protein hormone insulin is highly prone to form amyloid fibrils, and for this reason it is widely used as a model system to study fibril formation mechanisms. In this work, we focused on insulin aggregation mechanisms occurring in HCl solutions (pH 1.6) at 60 degrees C. By means of in situ Thioflavin T (ThT) staining, the kinetics profiles were characterized as a function of the protein concentration, and two concurrent aggregation pathways were pointed out, being concentration dependent. First , it describes the main econometric specifications which can be used to represent spatial heterogeneity , reflected in an instability of parameters in space and / or a heteroscedasticity of error terms .
